Waldorf Salad - History of the DishPopular, and easy to prepare, the Waldorf Salad is one of America's favorite fruit salads. It is often thought of as a dish to serve to company - perhaps because of its association with New York's classy Waldorf-Astoria Hotel -- but it can just as easily perform as an inexpensive, weekday delight. The dish was invented in the 1890s by maître d'hôtel, Oscar Tschirky, and the original ingredients were just apples, celery, and mayonnaise. Now, walnuts are the essential fourth ingredient. Grapes are also a common addition. Traditionally, the salad is served on a bed of fresh lettuce. Waldorf Salad recipe idea from a 1952 newspaper in which the salad is served in avocado halves. |
