A list of ideas for throwing your own home backyard Oktoberfest party, complete with ideas for decorating, costumes, food and fun.
Enjoy your Oktoberfest!
- Set your house up as a German Beer Hall or create and turn your yard into an outdoor Beer Garden. Use Alpine decorations, have tables with red-checked tablecloths, and place baskets around full of apples and fall gourds, topped with mini German flags and lots of German beer steins on tabletop.
- Play traditional Octoberfest music in the background (you can find downloads or audio CDs of this type of music for sale online) or have a live Oompah band.
- Make it a costume party. Everyone should come dressed in appropriate Bavarian attire – alpine hats with feathers, lederhosen, etc. Have some extra hats on hand for those who come without costume.
- Send out invitations decorated with maps of Germany on the front.
- Of course, the menu should include lots of German foods – Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, Spaetzle, Potato Pancakes, Sauerbraten, German Potato Salad, Apple Cake, Strudel, German Chocolate Cake, Cider, and – of course, have LOADS of German beers on hand. For a large party, get a keg of German beer – fun will be had by all!
