Here’s our list of some cool, fun ideas for planning and hosting a Hawaiian-Style Luau themed party including food, games, decorations, and contest ideas.
Can you say “Aloha”?!
- Everyone should dress in Hawaiian attire – Hawaiian shirts and dresses, hula skirts for the more ambitious. Have a big basket full of leis available for guests at the front entrance.
- Prepare name tags or name bracelets for all the guests to wear featuring their “Hawaiian” name.
- Decorate your yard with lots of bamboo tiki torches, coconuts, and palm tree party lights.
- Have pitchers full of Tropical rum drinks: Mai Tai, Pina Colada, Planter’s Punch, and Blue Hawaii are good choices. Have some non-alcoholic punch (maybe Hawaiian Punch – hehe) for the youngsters and the teetotalers in your group.
- Have a hula dancing competition! Girls and guys can join in to see who is the best dancer.
- Another idea :a Loudest Hawaiian Shirt Contest! Invite your guests to come wearing the most outrageous and loud Hawaiian shirt they can find, then have all the party guests vote. You can include the gals and Hawaiian dresses in this, or just stick to shirts. Give a prize to the winner and be sure to take lots of pictures!
- How low can you go? Have a Limbo competition. For those who don’t know what that is the rules are basically this: get a long wood pole (a bamboo pole would be great, but any long pole will do) then have two people hold it – one on each end. Play lively music and have everyone line up in a line. Start by holding the pole quite high above the ground. The object of the contest is for everyone to go under the Limbo pole without touching it or falling down. Each person goes under the pole and the pole is lowered a little after all the players have gone under it. Continue in rounds, lowering the pole after the whole group has gone. People are eliminated if they touch or fall. Eventually the pole will be quite low and close to the ground. A few good players will still be bending and trying to get under it. Winner is the last player standing.
- Don’t forget a table filled with Hawaiian eats and treats : we’re talking Kabobs, Tropical Fruit Salad, Hawaiian Pizza and Chicken Wings.
